This position is responsible for digitizing and performing varied data entry and manipulation to create, maintain, display and update a comprehensive geographic information system including accurate base maps, fee title and lease ownership documents.

Geographic Information Systems Technician I is the entry level in this specialized technical class series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn geographic and related mapping techniques and the use of appropriate computer hardware and software. This class is alternatively staffed with Geographic Information Systems Technician II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications for the higher level class.

Geographic Information Systems Technician II is the experienced level in this specialized technical series. Incumbents independently perform data entry, mapping, documentation and related work. This class is distinguished from the Geographic Information Systems Analyst classes in that the latter performs professional level work in the creation and manipulation of databases and provides technical assistance to technicians and support staff.

Requires equivalent to completion of two years of college or technical school, or possession of an Associate’s Degree with major course work in drafting, pre-engineering, computer science or geographic studies or a closely related field. Experience in digitizing data or working with geographic information system data may be substituted for the education on a year for year basis. Additionally, at the II level, one year of full-time technical experience in entering data and producing finished documents using a geographic information system.
